AC Buying Guide India 2026: What Actually Matters

BEE reset the star ratings in January 2026, so last year's 5 star is now a 4 star. Here is what to check on the label before you buy anything.

The star rating changed under you

Why last year's 5 star is this year's 4 star

This is the single most useful thing to know before walking into a showroom, and almost nobody selling you an AC will bring it up.

The star bands were recalibrated upward in January. Nothing about the machines changed, only the bar they're measured against, so a model that genuinely earned five stars last year now carries four. It is the same air conditioner, cooling the same room, using the same electricity.

Which creates a trap in August. Stock sitting in warehouses since the summer may still carry the older label, and a 5 star sticker from the 2025 scheme is not equivalent to a 5 star under the 2026 one. The label has a validity period field on it, and that field is where the answer is.

The 1 star category was dropped altogether, so the scale now runs from 2 to 5. If you see a 1 star unit being cleared cheaply, it's a machine that no longer meets the floor.

You can verify any model's registered rating on the Bureau of Energy Efficiency site rather than trusting the sticker on the box, and I'd do that for anything bought off season.

ISEER is the number, stars are just the packaging

Stars are a band. ISEER is the actual measurement, and two units with the same number of stars can sit at opposite ends of that band.

ISEER stands for Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, and the important word is seasonal. It's calculated across a range of outdoor temperatures rather than at one convenient lab setting, which makes it a much better predictor of what happens in a Delhi May than a simple efficiency figure would be.

Under the 2026 rules, 4.5 is a sensible floor for a home unit. Anything at 5.0 or above is genuinely efficient and worth paying for if the AC runs daily through summer. Below 4.5 you're buying somebody else's running cost.

The number is printed on the energy label, so comparing two shortlisted models takes about ten seconds once you know to look. I've watched people spend an hour comparing cooling features and never once look at the one number that decides the bill.

Treat the star count as a filter and the ISEER as the decision. Two 4 star units at 4.4 and 4.9 are not the same purchase.

How much tonnage your room needs

Getting this wrong costs you either comfort or money, and oversizing is as much a mistake as undersizing.

The practical bands most of the industry works to are 1 ton for rooms up to around 120 square feet, 1.5 ton from roughly 120 to 180, and 2 ton beyond that. For a typical bedroom, 1.5 ton is the common answer, which is why it's the size every brand pushes.

Adjust upward for a top floor flat, a room with west facing windows, a kitchen adjacent space, or more than two or three people in the room regularly. Heat coming through the ceiling in a top floor home is a genuinely large factor and square footage alone will underestimate it.

Be sceptical of online tonnage calculators. They disagree wildly with each other, and some of them use commercial building assumptions that produce answers far too small for an Indian bedroom in May. The room size bands above are closer to what actually works.

I found published rules of thumb ranging from one ton per 120 square feet to one ton per 600, sitting on sites that both present themselves as authoritative. That's a fivefold spread on the same question, and the larger figure will leave an Indian bedroom uncomfortable in May.

Undersizing means the unit runs flat out and never quite gets there. Oversizing means it cools fast, switches off, and leaves the room clammy because it never runs long enough to pull moisture out. If humidity rather than heat is your main complaint, a dehumidifier alongside a correctly sized AC beats buying a bigger AC.

Inverter or fixed speed, with the real numbers

A fixed speed compressor has one setting, which is full power. It runs at a hundred percent until the room hits your target and then switches off completely, then starts again from cold when the temperature drifts back up.

An inverter compressor varies its speed. It reaches your target and then slows down instead of stopping, running gently to hold the temperature there. That avoids the repeated hard restarts, which is where a fixed speed unit spends most of its electricity.

The numbers are worth knowing. A 1.5 ton fixed speed unit draws roughly 1.5 to 1.7 units an hour at full load, while an equivalent inverter settles to about 0.8 to 1.2 units once the room is cool. That works out to somewhere between 30 and 50 percent less electricity in normal use.

Run the AC six or more hours a day and the higher purchase price comes back within one to two years. Beyond that it's pure saving, and an inverter is also quieter and holds a steadier temperature, which matters more for sleeping than any spec sheet suggests.

The honest exception is a room used in short bursts, like a guest room switched on for an hour a month. There the payback never arrives and a fixed speed unit is the rational buy.

Copper coils and the things worth paying for

A short list, because most of what gets advertised does not belong on it.

Copper condenser coils are worth insisting on. They're more durable than aluminium and, more importantly, they're repairable. An aluminium coil with a leak is often a replacement job while a copper one can be fixed, and that difference shows up in year four rather than year one. Most decent brands use copper from the mid range upward.

Installation quality matters more than any feature you're choosing between. Pipe length, gas charge and the gradient of the drain line decide whether the unit performs to its rating or quietly underperforms for a decade. Book installation through the brand rather than through whoever delivers it.

Warranty terms deserve reading properly. The compressor warranty and the overall product warranty are different numbers on every unit, and the long figure advertised on the listing is nearly always the compressor alone.

Convertible modes, Wi-Fi control and app integration are pleasant and none of them change your bill. I'd take a higher ISEER over every one of them, because the efficiency is paid back monthly and the app is used twice.

Buying an AC in August

Off season is the cheapest time to buy an air conditioner in India and it comes with two specific catches.

Prices are genuinely lower now than they will be in March, and installation slots are available within a day or two rather than a week. If you know you'll need cooling next summer, buying it while nobody else is buying is the straightforward way to save money.

The first catch is old stock, which is exactly the label problem described above. Off season inventory is more likely to be carrying the previous rating scheme, so check the validity year on the label rather than assuming.

The second is that the warranty clock starts at purchase, not at first use. Buying in August means seven or eight months of warranty burn before the unit does any real work, which is a genuine cost against the discount and one nobody mentions.

For the rest of this year, a good fan or a cooler does more per rupee than an AC for most of the country.
