Quick verdict
For most people, Scalpe Pro is the safe first pick at ₹159 for 100 ml, with 4.1 from 31,967 ratings and the #1 spot in Shampoos. If you'd like selenium sulphide instead, Selsun has the highest rating here at 4.3. For the lowest cost, Head & Shoulders Smooth & Silky works out to about ₹99 per 100 ml.
Dandruff is common, and it isn't harmful. Most people start with a shampoo made for it. The part that matters is the active ingredient, and the bottles on Amazon.in name very different ones.
We compared six anti dandruff shampoos sold on Amazon.in. We looked at what each listing says is inside, the price per 100 ml, the rating, how many buyers stand behind it and the rank in the Shampoos list. Every number comes from the product pages on 31 Oct 2026, 03:48 IST.
A shampoo won't explain your flakes. If they don't settle after about four weeks, the advice near the end says when to see a doctor.

How to choose
Start with the active ingredient
The active ingredient matters more than the brand. The American Academy of Dermatology lists zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, sulfur, selenium sulfide, ketoconazole and coal tar as the ones to look for. Five of our six name at least one. Sebamed's only named active, piroctone olamine, isn't on that list.
If one shampoo stops working, the AAD suggests alternating between shampoos with different active ingredients. A zinc pyrithione bottle and a selenium sulphide bottle make a sensible pair.
Ketoconazole is sold as a medicine
Ketoconazole shampoos are on Amazon.in too. One 2% ketoconazole listing we checked gives its dosage as directed by the physician, so we left them out of this list.
Flakes that keep coming back need a doctor. The AAD says a dermatologist may prescribe a stronger dandruff shampoo or medication, and can tell whether the flakes are a sign of another skin condition.
How often to wash, by hair type
The AAD gives different advice for different hair. With fine or straight hair, or an oily scalp, you may need to shampoo daily and use a dandruff shampoo twice a week. With coarse, curly or coily hair, it suggests washing when needed and using dandruff shampoo about once a week, if tolerated.
For curly or coily hair, the AAD also says to put the dandruff shampoo on the scalp only. Its ingredients can dry the hair. You can follow with your usual shampoo and conditioner. If your worry is hair fall rather than flakes, our hair fall shampoo guide compares a different set.
Let it sit before you rinse
Dandruff shampoo needs to reach the scalp. The AAD says to lather it on the scalp, and some need to sit there for up to 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing. Directions differ by product, so read the bottle.
Coal tar shampoos can make the scalp more sensitive to the sun, per the AAD. None of the six here lists coal tar. Oils are a separate step, and our hair oil guide covers those for growth.
Give it four weeks, then see a doctor
The NHS says to use an anti dandruff shampoo for up to 4 weeks to see if your dandruff gets better. You might need more than one type to find one that works. It also says dandruff isn't caused by poor hygiene, though it can show more if you don't wash your hair regularly.
See a doctor if flakes last after at least 4 weeks of anti dandruff shampoo, the NHS says. The same goes for a very itchy, red or swollen scalp, or flaky, itchy patches on your face or body. In India, see a GP or dermatologist.
1. Scalpe Pro Daily Anti-Dandruff Shampoo, 100 ml: best overall
₹159
4.1 out of 5 on Amazon.in (31,967 ratings)
₹159 (as of 31 Oct 2026, 03:48 IST)
Scalpe Pro sat at #1 in Amazon.in's Shampoos list and #9 in all of Beauty when we checked. Glenmark Pharmaceuticals makes it. Its 4.1 rating rests on 31,967 ratings, the most of any shampoo in this guide.
The listing names three actives. Its bullets describe climbazole and ZPTO, which is zinc pyrithione, and they also mention piroctone olamine. The detail table lists only piroctone olamine, so read the bottle's label if one ingredient matters to you. The listing says a conditioning base helps prevent dryness even with daily washing.
- Pack: 100 ml
- Price per 100 ml: ₹159
- Actives on the listing: Climbazole, ZPTO, piroctone olamine
- Free from (listing): Parabens
- Scent: Fresh
- Maker: Glenmark Pharmaceuticals
- Made in: India
Good
- Most ratings in this guide, 31,967
- #1 in Shampoos on Amazon.in
- Listing says its conditioning base suits daily washing
Watch out
- Only 100 ml, so a daily washer will rebuy often
- Detail table and bullets don't list the same actives
Before you pay: Amazon.in shows more than one Scalpe Pro listing. Check that the price you see matches the pack size you want.
2. Selsun Abbott Suspension Anti Dandruff Shampoo, 120 ml: highest rated
₹392
4.3 out of 5 on Amazon.in (18,034 ratings)
₹392 (as of 31 Oct 2026, 03:48 IST)
Selsun had the highest rating of the six, 4.3 from 18,034 ratings. It sat at #25 in Shampoos. The detail table names one active, selenium sulphide at 2.5% w/v, in a buffered emulsion base.
Selenium sulfide is on the AAD's list of dandruff ingredients. That makes Selsun a different route from the zinc pyrithione and piroctone olamine in most of this list. If one type stops helping, the AAD suggests alternating between shampoos with different active ingredients. Selsun makes a sensible second bottle.
- Pack: 120 ml
- Price per 100 ml: About ₹327
- Active on the listing: Selenium sulphide 2.5% w/v
- Free from (listing): Parabens
- Scent: Unscented
- Maker: Abbott Healthcare
- Made in: India
Good
- Highest rating here, 4.3 out of 5
- One clearly named active, with its strength
- Unscented, per the listing
Watch out
- About ₹327 per 100 ml, over three times Head & Shoulders
- The listing gives almost no directions
Before you pay: Read the directions on the carton before the first wash. The Amazon.in listing has a single bullet, and it doesn't say how long to leave the shampoo on.
3. Head & Shoulders Anti Dandruff Shampoo, Smooth & Silky, 180 ml: lowest price per 100 ml
₹178
4.2 out of 5 on Amazon.in (1,530 ratings)
₹178 (as of 31 Oct 2026, 03:48 IST)
This Head & Shoulders bottle cost ₹178 for 180 ml. That's about ₹99 per 100 ml, the lowest in this guide. Its active is zinc pyrithione, the first ingredient on the AAD's list, and it carried 4.2 from 1,530 ratings at #86 in Shampoos.
The listing aims it at dry, damaged or frizzy hair. It says it's gentle enough for everyday washing, even on coloured or chemically treated hair. Shake the bottle first, the listing adds. Its rating pool is small next to the others, so give that 4.2 less weight than Scalpe Pro's 4.1.
- Pack: 180 ml
- Price per 100 ml: About ₹99
- Active on the listing: Zinc pyrithione
- Free from (listing): Alcohol
- Scent: Fresh
- Maker: Procter & Gamble
- Made in: India
Good
- Lowest price per 100 ml here
- Zinc pyrithione, a named AAD ingredient
- Listing says it suits coloured hair
Watch out
- Only 1,530 ratings behind its 4.2
- Ranked #86 in Shampoos, far below the leaders
Before you pay: Head & Shoulders sells many variants on separate listings with separate ratings. The 1 litre Cool Menthol pack cost ₹636 with 11,959 ratings, but its detail table names menthol as the active, so check the bottle you pick.
4. Pilgrim Australian Tea Tree Non-Drying Anti-Dandruff Shampoo, 200 ml: best value sulphate free
₹239
4.0 out of 5 on Amazon.in (12,107 ratings)
₹239 (as of 31 Oct 2026, 03:48 IST)
Pilgrim's bottle holds 200 ml for ₹239, about ₹120 per 100 ml. It's sulphate and paraben free, per the listing. It sat at #5 in Shampoos with 4.0 from 12,107 ratings.
Its detail table names salicylic acid. The bullets add piroctone olamine, zinc pyrithione and Australian tea tree. Pilgrim cites a clinical study by an independent lab in March 2024 for its flake claims. The listing doesn't link to that study, so treat those numbers as the brand's own.
- Pack: 200 ml
- Price per 100 ml: About ₹120
- Actives on the listing: Salicylic acid, piroctone olamine, zinc pyrithione, tea tree
- Free from (listing): Sulphates, parabens
- Scent: Unscented, per the listing
- Maker: Kapco International
- Made in: India
Good
- Sulphate free at about ₹120 per 100 ml
- 200 ml bottle, double the size of most here
- Ranked #5 in Shampoos
Watch out
- 4.0 rating, the joint lowest in this guide
- Flake claims rest on a study the listing doesn't show
Before you pay: Pilgrim sells a lot of hair products. Check that the title says Anti-Dandruff and 200ml before you add it to the cart.
5. Bare Anatomy Anti-Dandruff Shampoo, 100 ml: best vegan pick
₹249
4.0 out of 5 on Amazon.in (18,198 ratings)
₹249 (as of 31 Oct 2026, 03:48 IST)
Bare Anatomy ranked #4 in Shampoos and #40 in all of Beauty, with 4.0 from 18,198 ratings. The listing calls it vegan. It also lists it as free of sulphates, parabens, alcohol, formaldehyde and phthalates.
Its bullets pair salicylic acid, which the listing says exfoliates the scalp, with piroctone olamine. The listing says that second active targets Malassezia, a yeast on the scalp. Biotin and pentavitin are there for strength and dryness, per the brand. At ₹249 for 100 ml, it costs about twice Pilgrim's price per 100 ml. The bottle is small, though.
- Pack: 100 ml
- Price per 100 ml: ₹249
- Actives on the listing: Salicylic acid, piroctone olamine
- Also in it: Biotin, pentavitin
- Free from (listing): Sulphates, parabens, alcohol, formaldehyde, phthalates
- Maker: Onesto Labs
- Made in: India
Good
- Longest free from list in this guide
- Vegan, per the listing
- 18,198 ratings, second most here
Watch out
- ₹249 for only 100 ml
- Its up to 100% claim comes with an asterisk, so read the fine print
Before you pay: Bare Anatomy sells other shampoos in similar packs. Check that the title says Anti-Dandruff before you pay.

₹546
4.1 out of 5 on Amazon.in (7,118 ratings)

Its active is piroctone olamine. The listing shows the full ingredient list. Sodium laureth sulfate is the second ingredient, so it isn't a sulphate free pick. The listing says dermatologists formulated it to clear excess sebum, which it links to dandruff.
- Pack: 200 ml
- Price per 100 ml: About ₹273
- Active on the listing: Piroctone olamine
- Contains: Sodium laureth sulfate
- Free from (listing): Parabens

Before you pay: The Indian listing names USV as the importer. Look for that name on the carton when it arrives.
How we compared
We opened each Amazon.in product page on 31 Oct 2026, 03:48 IST and copied the price, the rating, the number of ratings, the rank in Shampoos and the active ingredients each listing names. Price per 100 ml is our own math from the price and the pack size.
We haven't washed with these shampoos, so nothing here is a claim about how they feel or work on a scalp. The ingredient advice comes from the AAD and the NHS. Prices on Amazon.in change often, so yours may differ from the price on the day we checked. Treat the numbers as a snapshot. More guides sit in our beauty section.
Questions people ask
Which anti dandruff shampoo is best in India?
On the day we checked, Scalpe Pro led Amazon.in's Shampoos list at ₹159 for 100 ml, with 4.1 from 31,967 ratings. Selsun had the highest rating at 4.3. The best one for you depends on which active ingredient suits your scalp.
How often should I use anti dandruff shampoo?
The AAD suggests twice a week for fine or straight hair or an oily scalp. For coarse, curly or coily hair, it suggests about once a week. Follow your bottle's directions too, since some need to sit for 5 to 10 minutes.
How long does anti dandruff shampoo take to work?
The NHS says to use it for up to 4 weeks to see if your dandruff gets better. If it hasn't improved after at least 4 weeks, it says to see a doctor.
Is dandruff caused by not washing your hair?
No. The NHS says dandruff isn't caused by poor hygiene, though it may be more obvious if you don't wash your hair regularly. It may come from a yeast that lives on the skin, or from skin conditions such as eczema.
Does hair oil help with dandruff?
The AAD and NHS pages on dandruff don't name oil as a treatment. They point to anti dandruff shampoos instead. If your goal is growth, our rosemary vs onion oil guide compares two popular oils.
