Quick verdict

For most families, Mother Sparsh Cold Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil is the pick, ₹264 for 200 ml, with 4.5 from 1,839 ratings and the #2 rank in Baby Oils. Cold pressed coconut is on a children's hospital's list of oils for massage at home. Himalaya costs the least per 10 ml. Sebamed is the unscented pick.

Oil massage is part of baby care in many Indian homes. The oil touches your baby's skin every day. So it's worth reading the label before you buy.

Six baby massage oils sold on Amazon.in made the cut. For each one, we compared the price, the size, the cost per 10 ml, the base oil its listing names, the rating, how many buyers stand behind that rating and its rank in Baby Oils. Every number comes from the product pages on 31 Oct 2026, 03:48 IST.

We checked each oil against a baby massage handout from a children's hospital, a University of Manchester study on newborn skin and a paper on camphor. Two big sellers didn't make the cut, and we explain why below. A massage oil is for everyday care. It isn't a treatment for a skin condition.

How to choose

Start with a cold pressed oil

A baby massage handout from CHOC, the Children's Hospital of Orange County in California, names oils for massage at home. Its list is cold pressed coconut, sesame, safflower and grape seed oil. It says the body absorbs these oils without clogging pores.

Mother Sparsh is cold pressed coconut. OYO BABY is pure sesame, though its listing doesn't say how it's pressed. Mamaearth has coconut in its blend. None of the other three uses an oil from that list. Read the base oil row in the table to see each one.

Know what one study found on olive and sunflower oil

A University of Manchester pilot study split 115 newborns into three groups: olive oil, sunflower oil and no oil. After 28 days of a few drops twice a day, the skin barrier developed more slowly in both oil groups. The oiled skin was better hydrated. The researchers still said they can't recommend either oil for healthy newborn skin.

It's one small study, and the authors call for more research. Still, two picks here are olive oil, Himalaya and Figaro. Cetaphil's baby oil, #10 in Baby Oils, lists sunflower seed oil as an active ingredient, so we left it out. For a newborn, ask your paediatrician which oil to start with.

Skip camphor and strong balms

Some baby oils sold in India contain camphor. A paper in the Journal of Tropical Pediatrics says camphor, menthol and eucalyptus products aren't currently recommended for children under 2. It names two risks: a baby may swallow some, and young skin may absorb too much. It calls camphor particularly dangerous for young children.

Read the active ingredient field on the listing before you buy. None of our six names camphor there. That's why one of the best selling baby oils on Amazon.in isn't in this guide.

Keep oil off the face and patch test first

CHOC's handout says not to put oils on the face. The OYO BABY listing adds two steps that suit every oil here. Patch test before first use, and keep the oil away from the eyes.

For a patch test, rub a little oil on a small patch of skin. Watch it for redness or a rash before a full massage. Warm the oil between your hands first.

Ask your doctor when your baby needs more

A massage oil is for everyday care. If your baby was born early, has eczema or has a rash that won't clear, talk to your paediatrician before you start. The same goes for a family history of nut, soy or wheat allergy.

A doctor may suggest a different oil or a cream. Take the bottle or a photo of its label with you, so the doctor can read the ingredients.

How we compared

We opened each Amazon.in product page on 31 Oct 2026, 03:48 IST and copied the price, the size, the rating, the number of ratings and the rank. All six rank in Amazon.in's Baby Oils list, so we compared them there. Price per 10 ml uses the size each listing states. Ingredients and claims appear as each listing states them.

We left out two big sellers. Dabur Lal Tail ranked #5 in Baby Oils, but its listing names camphor as the active ingredient. Johnson's Baby Oil ranked #8, and its listing names mineral oil, which CHOC's handout says can clog pores. The American Academy of Dermatology lists mineral oil among ingredients for dry skin, so leaving it out is a cautious call. We didn't buy these oils, so nothing here describes how they feel. Prices change often. Our baby section has more guides, such as our stroller guide.

Why skip baby oils with camphor?

A paper in the Journal of Tropical Pediatrics says camphor, menthol and eucalyptus products aren't currently recommended for children under 2. A baby may swallow some, and young skin may absorb too much. It calls camphor particularly dangerous for young children.
